About

Software Engineer & Systems Architect
I’m Carl Handy — a software engineer specializing in systems design, software architecture, and scalable application development. I build production systems, design technical architectures, and ship open-source tools on the NPM registry.
What I Do
My work sits at the intersection of systems design and hands-on engineering. I design and build distributed systems, architect frontend and backend solutions, and lead technical teams through complex builds. My stack spans modern JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystems — from Astro and Nuxt.js to Node.js and cloud-native deployments on platforms like Cloudflare.
I write about the realities of software engineering: architecture decisions, engineering leadership, security practices, and the craft of building software that lasts.
Engineering Leadership
I serve as a Director at TechServe Inc, where I drive technology strategy and advocate for open-source adoption in the Caribbean tech ecosystem. Since 2019, I’ve been a Project Periwinkle Ambassador, applying technology to social impact.
I’ve written extensively on engineering leadership — from navigating impostor syndrome to understanding the difference between technical managers and true engineering leaders. My perspective comes from over a decade in the industry, moving from hands-on development to architecting systems and leading teams.
Open Source & Community
I’m an active open-source contributor with projects published on the NPM registry. I believe that open-source innovation is a force multiplier, especially for emerging tech communities. I’ve written about open source and the Guyanese digital frontier, exploring how open-source practices can accelerate technology adoption in developing regions.
Beyond Code
Outside of engineering, I’m a certified drone pilot, a pianist, and a former competitive table tennis athlete. The discipline from competitive athletics — pattern recognition, strategic thinking under pressure, and iterative improvement — directly informs how I approach systems design and architecture.
If you share my passion for building well-architected software, engineering leadership, or open-source innovation, I’d love to connect and see what we can build together.
